active doggy top pick gear review final

Pros: Very affordable, great replacement option to the traditional dog harness.

Cons: Plastic buckles, only 3 sizes

Bottom line: The Pettom brand is very similar to OneTigris and Ultrafun with minor differences. The Pettom is offered with 3 detachable pouches by some retailers.

Manufacturer: Pettom

The breakdown

The Pettom brand tactical dog harness is a solid option when searching for a durable dog vest. It resembles the OneTigris and Ultrafun short vests with minor differences. The most notable difference is the material in this vest seems a little “stiffer” than the other two. It appears to be made from 1000D nylon material but it may be a less expensive thread? We’re not entirely sure. The hardware, durability, breathability and everything else appears to be great. There isn’t much of a price difference for this vest unless you choose the option with three attachments, which is a great deal.

Best applications

Finding a job for your dog  will benefit both you and him. One of the best tools you can get your dog when giving him a job is a tactical harness. A tactical harness is different from the traditional harnesses you  find at your local pet shop. Tactical harnesses allow your dog to feel like they are on the job opposed to just a walk. They allow your dog to carry gear, supplies and identification tags and look cool while doing it.

Not all dogs are willing or capable to do some jobs so choose one carefully for your pup. Social dogs that love people would make for a great medic while serious lone wolf types might like to be the navigator or point man role.  If you don’t have a job for your dog to do then use this vest to assist in training.

When searching for a tactical dog harness consider all the jobs your dog both can and want to do and pick a vest best suited to accommodate those jobs. They come in all shapes and sizes so shop around and find the best fit.

Reduce pulling

By putting this vest on your dog during walks or hiking trips, you could reduce the pulling significantly. It has been proven that when a high energetic dog, that pulls during walks, wears a tactical vest they slow down. Researchers credit the idea that your dog feels like he’s “on the job” and there is no time for acting out. Furthermore, the reduction of pulling can be a result of the dogs stress and anxiety being reduced from the protection they get wearing the vest. Consider getting a tactical dog leash for a more secure leash attachment if your dog is an extreme puller.

Medic

Attaching a medical kit and supplies to your dogs vest will give him a very important and helpful job as a medic. Whether your training alone with your dog or hiking in a populated area, having medical supplies is always a good idea. Consider attaching a prominent MEDIC badge for identification purposes and let people know your dog has supplies in case of an emergency. This vest has plenty of room for gear and badge attachments.

Navigator

Whether you’re going on a long hike in the deep woods or participating in a search and rescue mission, having a navigator in your group is important. Now, we all know dogs can’t read maps and navigate but they can carry the gear. With the Molle webbing and secure VELCRO on this vest you can give your dog the navigator title and allow him to carry the gear. Having your dog carry the navigation necessities is great. If you’re ever in need of your compass, map, flashlight or phone, you can easily pull it from your dogs vest instead of digging through your pack.

Point man

When walking on a leash, most dogs tend to lead and walk in front of us. Some like to walk with us by our sides but that is rare. When your dog leads he is taking the role of the point man. This causes him to be the first one exposed to a threat or danger. If hiking in the deep woods with wild animals or a neighborhood with wild dogs, consider getting your point man the Ultrafun tactical dog vest.

You can attach necessary items like battery operated LED lights and  reflector badges for better visibility, a small cow bell for an audio deterrent, or even protective spikes. The vest itself will also help protect your dog from scratching or minor attacks from wild animals. Make sure your point man is protected and safe during your adventures and training.

You don’t want the straps on the vest to be maxed out.

You want to get the correct size vest for your dog otherwise they will not enjoy using it. There are many different guides, how-to’s, reviews and testimonies all about sizing up your dog.

Durability

1000D Nylon

The Ultrafun tactical dog vest is made with durable high-density, water-resistant, anti-tear 1000D nylon material. It is made from the same material they use for manufacturing  U.S. military gear. To say it’s durable is an understatement. You won’t have to worry about replacing this vest due to a rip or tear in the material.

Straps and buckles

The straps that hold the four-point harness system have strong bar tack box stitching on each load bearing point and joint to ensure they don’t rip or break off. Additionally, the handle located at the back of the neck is securely attached to the vest with box stitching on both sides as well. This vest is lightweight, durable and water resistant.

PALS webbing for Molle attachments

The PALS grid consists of horizontal rows of 1 in Type III nylon webbing, spaced 1 in apart, and reattached to the backing at 1.5 in intervals. This follows the PALS standards used in the U.S. Military. The PALS webbing is used to attach your Molle gear attachments and other gear with attachment options. You can use Velcro or accessories with button straps as long as it can fit through the 1″ PALS grid.

Comfort

  • Thin water proof and soft lining

The Pettom tactical harness is great for everyday use. It has a 4-point harness system that allows you get the perfect fit to your dogs unique body. It has a soft, thin and water proof material underneath to prevent chaffing and soreness. The vest is not too big in length or in weight. Not having a big and bulky vest will easily allow your dog to lie down and rest in the shade.

Breathability

You don’t want your dog to overheat or have to take a cool down break every 10 minutes. Keeping your dog cool while training or hiking is important. You want to ensure the vest you put on your dog allows proper ventilation and air flow. If you plan on training or hiking in the summer heat then you’ve got nothing to worry about with this vest. The thin material allows for maximum air flow while also protecting from the harmful sun UV rays.

Conclusion

Tactical dog vests can be a great way to improve your dogs behavior, assist them with training and give them a job to do. In addition, the  adventures, missions and hikes you go on will build a stronger bond between you and your dog. The simplicity, durability and  attachment space of the Pettom tactical harness make it a fantastic option for both the seasoned veteran or a new recruit learning the ropes.
