Best Toys For Destructive Dogs in 2018 | Aggressive Chewers!

We were on a streak for awhile where we would order new toys from Amazon at least once a month. We were searching all over for the best toys for destructive dogs. From footballs and Frisbees to tug ropes and synthetic bones. Our dogs love to chew them all until they are absolutely shredded!

Which dogs apply to this list?

This list is intended for dogs that love to chew, chew and chew. Dogs that can chew through wood, hard plastic, tough fabric, leather and other durable material.

It is not a list for dogs that have been known to shred Kongs, metal or other impossible to shred toys.

Not all dogs are the same

Not all dogs are the same so our list of the best toys for destructive dogs may not be suitable for your dog. There have been numerous dog owners that cannot simply find the best toy for their dog, no matter how many they try. The reason for that is simple. They do not exist. If you know of a toy that has stood up to a monster please share it with us!

Kong Classic Toy

These are extremely thick rubber toys with a hollow center and ridges on the outside. They come in a variety of size from extra small to XXL. You can also find them in different colors.

The Kong was originally promoted as a retrieval toy that could be thrown and, due to the cone shape and ridges, have an unpredictable bounce. Even the toughest chewers cannot destroy this toy.

Stuffing a Kong is great!

Recently the Kong has been advertised as a “stuffing” toy that can be stuffed with treats to keep your dog entertained hours on end. Kong has come up with plenty of clever goodies that you can put inside like, peanut butter, bits of chicken or meat, cheese or specialized Kong treat designed for stuffing. Read our article about healthy dog treats for stuffing in Kong’s.

We have numerous Kong toys lying around our house and use them to occupy our dogs when we have guests over or just want to have a quiet movie night.

Make sure to get the right Kong for your dog. You don’t want to get one that is too big or too small.

The Jolly Ball!

The Jolly ball is designed for horses but due to their durability, dog owners have been using them to entertain their dogs with them too. They are made and manufactured in the USA and hold a solid reputation for holding up against even the most savage beatings.

The Jolly ball is a big rubber ball with a handle that you or your dog can use to pick it up. Some dogs will go directly into chewing the handle off so when you first introduce your pup to it watch them closely.

You want to train them to chase and fetch the Jolly ball. Let them know it is not meant to chew on. You can kick the Jolly ball like a soccer ball, or you can throw it by the sturdy handle.

This is an extremely durable toy for playing fetch with only. Although for horses they tend to hold up fairly well, for aggressive chewers they could be punctured.

It is not recommended to leave your dog alone with the Jolly Ball. If you have doubts about whether your dog will chew the handle while your away then put the Jolly ball up when you’re done playing.

PROS
  • Comes in 5 colors purple, red, blue, pink & green!
  • Will keep its shape even after punctured.
  • Long lasting and durable.
  • Dog’s love them!
  • Manufactured in the USA!
CONS
  • If left unattended with an aggressive chewer, the Jolly ball will be punctured. Never leave your dog unattended while playing with it. This applies to most dog chew toys.

Word of caution

If your dog has aggressive issues it is recommended that you do not play tug-of-war with him. Tug-of-war is one game that means something entirely different to your dog and you.

For dogs it is a dominance game and is fine to play with other dogs. But watch how the game is played out and you’ll see standoffs, growling and dogs pulling with all their might. They play it in order to gain rank within the pack.

Ultimately the in the dog world whoever wins at tug-of-war is the leader. So if you play with your dog and let them win then you have given your dog a message that he is the winner and has a higher rank than you in the pack.

Every dog is different and most dogs know that their owner or “parent” is the true leader. That doesn’t mean that they feel the same way about every human. So letting them win at tug-of-war while playing with their owner may lead them to think they have dominance over other humans.

If your dog doesn’t act aggressive towards people or other dogs then you have nothing to worry about. Tug-a-war all you want!
